How to Automate Google Sheets Cleanup with n8n (Loop All Tabs & Clear Ranges)

September 30, 2026 | Umair Alam | 7 min read

If you manage business operations, client reporting, or sales tracking in Google Sheets, you probably have workbooks with 10, 20, or even 50 separate tabs. At the end of every week or month, someone on your team has to open the spreadsheet, click through every single sheet tab, select the old data rows, and manually delete them—taking extra care not to accidentally erase header rows or formula columns. Doing this manually is slow, mind-numbing, and prone to costly human errors.

TL;DR: Using n8n, a powerful open-source workflow automation platform, you can automate multi-tab Google Sheet data cleaning with zero manual effort. In this guide, we build a lightweight automation that dynamically fetches all tab names from a workbook, loops through them one by one, and clears specific cell ranges (such as A2:B and C2:I) while keeping your header labels and formulas completely safe.

What You’ll Learn

  • Why manual spreadsheet cleaning wastes dozens of hours and how automation fixes it
  • Why n8n is superior to Zapier and Google Apps Script for batch operations
  • How to connect n8n to Google Sheets using secure OAuth2 credentials
  • How to dynamically fetch names of all the sheets (tabs) from a single spreadsheet
  • How to use the n8n Loop Over Items node to process tabs sequentially
  • How to clear custom cell ranges while protecting Row 1 headers
  • How to schedule the workflow to run automatically on a weekly or monthly cron schedule

Why n8n Beats Zapier and Google Apps Script

When developers and office workers want to automate Google Sheets, they usually turn to Google Apps Script or Zapier. Both hit severe limitations:

  1. Google Apps Script Limitations: Writing custom JavaScript in Apps Script works, but it has a hard 6-minute execution limit. If your spreadsheet has 40 tabs with thousands of rows, Apps Script often times out halfway through, leaving your workbook in a broken, half-deleted state.
  2. Zapier Is Too Expensive: Zapier charges per task execution. Looping through 30 tabs weekly eats through hundreds of paid Zapier tasks, costing you $20 to $50/month for a basic cleanup.
  3. The n8n Advantage: n8n is open-source and free. It can run locally on your computer or self-hosted on a cheap $4/month cloud VPS (like Hetzner or DigitalOcean). There are zero task quotas, no artificial execution timeouts, and complete data privacy.

Step 1: Connecting n8n to Google Sheets

Before building the logic, you need to connect n8n to your Google account:

  1. Open your n8n workspace and go to Credentials > New Credential.
  2. Search for Google Sheets OAuth2 API.
  3. Follow the setup prompt to create an OAuth Client ID in the Google Cloud Console, enable the Google Sheets API, and copy your Client ID and Client Secret into n8n.
  4. Click Connect my account and grant read/write permissions for your spreadsheets.

Step 2: Fetching All Sheet Tabs Dynamically

Instead of hardcoding tab names (like Sheet1, Sheet2, Sales_East) into your workflow, we configure n8n to read the workbook’s metadata so it automatically discovers new tabs whenever you add them:

  1. Add a Google Sheets Node to your canvas.
  2. Set the Resource to Spreadsheet and the Operation to Get.
  3. Paste your Spreadsheet ID (the long string of letters and numbers in your Google Sheet URL between /d/ and /edit).
  4. Under fields to return, select Sheets / Metadata.
  5. When you click Test step, n8n will return a clean JSON array containing the titles of every single tab currently existing in your workbook.

Step 3: Setting Up the Loop Over Items Node

Now that n8n holds a list of all your tabs, we need to process them one at a time:

  1. Add a Loop Over Items node (or Split in Batches in older n8n versions).
  2. Connect the output of your Google Sheets metadata node into the loop input.
  3. Set the batch size to 1.
  4. This ensures n8n takes the first tab name, performs the cleanup, loops back, takes the second tab name, and continues until all tabs are processed.

Step 4: Clearing Data Ranges While Preserving Headers

This is the critical step where data is wiped without destroying your formulas or header labels:

  1. Connect a second Google Sheets Node inside the loop.
  2. Set the Operation to Clear.
  3. Set the Sheet Name to dynamic by mapping the output from the Loop node:
    {{ $json.properties.title }}

  4. Define Your Range:
    • If your headers sit on Row 1, specify your range starting from Row 2:
    • Example 1: A2:Z (Clears everything from column A to Z, starting at row 2 down to the bottom of the sheet).
    • Example 2 (Split Columns): A2:B and D2:I if you have protected calculation formulas in column C that you don’t want touched.
  5. Close the loop by connecting the output of the Clear node back into the input of the Loop Over Items node.

When executed, n8n cycles through every single tab in seconds, clearing all rows from Row 2 downwards while leaving Row 1 headers crisp and untouched!

Step 5: Automating the Cleanup with a Schedule Trigger

Once tested, you don’t even need to open n8n to click “Execute”:

  1. Replace the manual When clicking “Test workflow” trigger with a Schedule Trigger node.
  2. Set your trigger frequency:
    • Weekly: Run every Sunday at 11:59 PM to reset sheets for Monday morning.
    • Monthly: Run on the 1st of every month at midnight.
  3. Toggle the workflow to Active. Your Google Sheets will now automatically reset themselves on autopilot!

💡 Hosting Pro-Tip: Run n8n 24/7 for $4/Month

While you can run n8n for free on your local laptop, scheduled workflows won’t trigger if your computer is in sleep mode.

To keep your automations running 24/7:

  • Deploy n8n on a lightweight cloud VPS using DigitalOcean or Hetzner Cloud.
  • A basic $4 to $6/month VPS has plenty of power to run Docker with n8n, giving you an enterprise-grade automation server for less than the cost of a single cup of coffee!

Summary & What to Try Next

Automating multi-tab spreadsheet maintenance eliminates one of the most tedious administrative tasks in modern office work:

  1. Connect n8n to Google Sheets API.
  2. Fetch all sheet titles dynamically.
  3. Loop each tab and trigger the Clear Range operation on A2:Z.
  4. Schedule the workflow to run weekly/monthly or as per your requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will this workflow delete my formulas or dropdown validation?

If your formulas live in Row 1 (e.g. array formulas like =ARRAYFORMULA(...)), they are completely safe. If you have formulas in specific columns (like Column D), you can specify disjoint ranges (like A2:C and E2:Z) to clear only the raw input columns.

Can I filter out certain tabs that shouldn’t be cleared?

Yes! You can insert an IF Node or Filter Node right after fetching the sheet metadata. For example, configure the condition: “Only continue if tab title does NOT equal ‘Settings’ or ‘Summary'”.

Does n8n require coding knowledge to use?

Not at all. n8n is a visual, node-based workflow builder. You simply connect boxes with lines, select dropdown options, and click test. No complex JavaScript coding is required.
